Two days ago, Janie got into an ant pile in our back yard. When we saw the bites on her leg (about 6 in all), Daddy helped the ants "go to a happier place," as he told the girls. :)
I noticed that Janie was scratching her bites so I was putting calamine lotion on them, aka the pink medicine. But last night, I noticed that one of her ankles and feet was red and really swollen.
I asked Jonathan to look at it. He was mildly alarmed, which means I became very alarmed. Apparently, she had been scratching and she opened her skin and her little dirty fingernails got the site infected. Jonathan calls it a soft tissue infection.
So we got some medicine called in. When I went to pick it up, CVS said they don't take our insurance. Target pharmacy was called next, but they were closing. Walgreens pulled through for us and by 8 pm, we had the goods. So we woke up Janie and gave her the medicine and some bread. She was having a great 'ol time, being up with Mommy and Daddy. I was so relieved I was sure I was going to sleep well, knowing my girl was taken care of.
At 1:40 am, Janie woke up crying. She had thrown up. We cleaned her up and put her back down. At 2 am, she woke up crying because her bandaid came off (really, Janie?), and by 2:15 she had thrown up again. So we gave her bread AND milk to settle her stomach. By this time, Jonathan told me that the medicine had potassium which upsets stomachs. Then he looked at the bottle, read the instructions to the pharmacist and realized that she hadn't diluted the medicine enough, so he diluted it some more. She had had a really strong dose. We put her back down, and at 2:45, she had thrown up again. We were all tired by this time, and I was so sad for Janie. Throwing up is absolutely no fun. Good thing I had a Klondike bar last night to keep my strength up ;).
It was a long night, but we did sleep after that. Today she woke up at 6:30, just like normal. Her foot looks better and I am hoping for 8 hours of sleep tonight. I don't really mind getting up with my kids when they are sick, because I feel so bad for them. But I love sleep and I don't function well without it. I know that one day, I will look back on experiences like this and smile because my girls were so sweet and cute and easy to take care of (compared to teenagers). But I am still hoping for a good nights sleep...

I am so sorry that Janie tried to make friends with the wrong type of God's creatures. I remember the big red ants from when I was a sub-teen. It was horrible even when just one bit you. My heart goes out to her. Sure glad that it is all over with. Tell her that I am proud of her for being such a good patient and getting all of the bites healed. Have a wonderful weekend.
Poor Janie! So glad you were able to figure it out and get her feeling better.
Oh poor little Janie! No fun!
But I totally agree with you on the sleep thing. Some people say they don't have time for it but I view it as a good investment. I'm so much happier and nicer when I get my sleep and I think that makes it worth it.
Thank goodness Doctor Dad knew what the cause of all the vomiting was. So sorry that she had to suffer (and you too, BTW). I send the threatening bugs to "Bug Heaven" on a regular basis. :D
